Homemade costumes
Friday, October 23rd, 2009 9:57 amWith all this talk about homemade Halloween costumes, I decided to go digging around in my basement for some old photos to share with you.
Now, please note that these pics were taken before digital cameras, so they aren’t as bright and focused as I would like — but, oh, my gosh, they bring back great memories.
The first photo is of my son, when he was about 3 years old, in the now-famous laundry machine costume I made for him in 1994. This is by far my favorite Halloween costume ever. I mean, just look at him — adorable.
Of course, this little bumblebee was pretty adorable, too. This is from Babycakes’ first Halloween two years ago. No, I didn’t make the costume, but the cuteness factor is way up there, anyway.
And the last photo is of — can you guess? — me (on the left). Of course, I was dressed up as a princess, which is what my Babycakes (soon to turn 3) wants to dress up as for Halloween this year. My costume was homemade in this picture from about 1982, I’m guessing, as I stand with Angie Robbins at the Viola, Ill., Sesquicentennial Parade. I’m actually patting myself on the back right now that I remember Angie’s name! Angie, where are you nowadays??? She sure was a cute Laura Ingalls Wilder in that photo. I remember painstakingly drawing and coloring that crown that I’m wearing in the picture. And I was wearing my Mom’s high heels, too. I walked through that entire parade wearing my Mom’s shoes. I think the judges must have felt sorry for me, because I won a ribbon and a prize — I think it was a whole $3 or something. I was thrilled.
I lingered a little while longer than I planned looking at those old photo albums. It’s funny how old photos can take you back to another time in just an instant. I laughed a lot as I turned those pages last night. It was a fun blast from the past.
But when my time was up, when the oven timer started tweeting, I was still smiling as I ran back upstairs — back into my present. The old days were great, but today is pretty awesome, too.
What are you up to this weekend?

I love these photos. The laundry machine is great! Isn’t is fun and heartwarming when our kids want something that brings a blast from our own past. Like BC wanting to be a princess now too. When she is older you will be able to look at the photos from both your pasts and compare the experiences.
Would you beleive me when I say we are doing a whole lotta nothing? Yea right! I have decorating to do tonight for the WEST HIGH VOCAL BOOSTERS CRAFT FAIR (COME ONE COME ALL). That runs Saturday from 8-3 in the school cafeteria. See the upcoming events on QCTimes for more info…..
Then there is a baseball team halloween party at our house and the last Rising Knights game of the season.
Will you hit any of the parades with babycakes? I hope the weather straightens out for them.

Home made costumes are soo much fun. I think next year my mom and I are going to try and make the boys’ costumes. I will need her help because I am the idea person and she is the one who will make it happen (and make it fit.)
This weekend is my three year olds first day of gymnastics. I am soo excited for him to start enjoying new activities. He is becoming such a big boy!!

Your Princess dress should look familiar to “Your Very Own Cousin Leslie” since you wore it as a flower girl in her wedding! I can still remember seeing you in that parade! At first, you would nervously look my way as I struggled to make my way through the crowd, trying to keep up with you to make certain that you didn’t get lost in the shuffle of excited people, large floats, convertible cars, John Deere tractors and Winola High School’s marching band in the chaos at the other end of the route. After you got used to it, you’d look over and smile at me as you tried to keep your balance while shuffling along the mile long route in the blistering heat, wearing the long dress, a scratchy blue curtain panel(as a floor length cape)and my high heels. Your little feet only used about 1/3 of the space in those shoes, so it was as if you were walking down a ramp! That was the day that “Miss Peggy”, the local T.V. host of Romper Room (your favorite show at the time!)presented you with a grand prize for not being killed or lost during the parade! This is one of my favorite memories of you being a little girl! Thank you for remembering it, too! (PS…your crown is STILL a timeless classic! I think you should remake it for Babycake’s princess outfit!)

I may come as Carrie to our Halloween party at Warren Tower.
Remmember the movie, and the terrible revenge she exacted on the evil, cold hearted clicque?

My dad rigged a hoola hoop and in a harness to sit around my shoulders and draped a shower curtain from it. He then plopped a shower cap on and off I went as a kid in a shower for halloween. Needless to say, I took home first prize.

Love the shower idea! Too cute. I’m surprised my son never thought of that. He had a streak of wanting to be inanimate objects, including the laundry machine and a table (that was another cardboard box outfit, with a hole in the top for his head to come through, covered with a tablecloth and glued-on plastic food). Of course, he always made a cute inanimate object, with his radiant smile.

Your very own cousin does recognize that dress! I will have to find the picture of you as flower girl!
